Swim: about a week, after all scabs have fallen off and the skin is
smooth again.
Expose it to the sun: ideally, never again, at least not without
sunblock. While it's most vulnerable in the first 4-8 weeks, UV rays
will fade a tattoo over time. At least avoid sun*burn* like the plague.

I'd still prefer finding a competent artist at home so you have someone
to go to if there's a problem. The prospect of a customer never
returning *could* lead to "interesting" business practices...
