I was watching on Miami ink, They actually put polysporin or some type of cream on the skin and then tattoo through it. Is this a normal practice? I also see them dipping their needles into sterile water to clean the needle before switching colours. I haven't seen this before.

I've never had any cream put on me while hav'n a tattoo done but the guys that did my back did dip their needles into sterile water
