Disappearing Ink

What do you do if the tattoo you got at 21 after a long night out with friends suddenly isn’t starting to seem like such a hot idea?
Sure, you could cover it up with clothes, but there are other options.
Though a recent study showed nearly a quarter of people between ages 18 and 50 have at least one tattoo, there are still some folks who’d rather forget the time they spent under the needle.
That’s where tattoo removal comes in.
Though better than a third of people between ages 18 and 29 have tattoos, Norma Cataldo, clinical director of Cosmetic Laser Solutions, said many will eventually try to get them removed.
The Pawtucket, R.I.-based business also has offices in Wilmington and Woburn.
"I’d say probably half of them will get them off," she said. "Especially if it’s any type of ex-boyfriend or ex-husband."
# Tattoo removal uses a laser to break up the ink under the skin, which is then absorbed into the body in about six weeks.
# Black ink is the easiest to remove, while green, which sits in a different layer of skin, is hardest.
# Just like it hurts to get a tattoo, removing one isn’t painless. The laser used causes the skin to blister and scab. Once the wound heals, the ink begins to fade.
# Removing a tattoo isn’t instantaneous. Depending on the size and color, it could take up to 20 sessions before the ink disappears completely.
# The removal process isn’t cheap either. A typical session, which covers about a 1-inch square area, can cost between $200 and $500.
# In most people, the removal process is total, but for some tattoos, only 90 percent of the ink will disappear.
