Hi
My daughter had her ear pierced just up from the lobe on Thursday. I dont think it went through cartilage. Today, Sunday, she took the back off to clean it and the stud came out. She can't get it back in and the ear has swollen slightly trying. It is now sore. How long before it heals over i.e give up trying. Leaving it at the mo for the swelling to go down. How long before she could have it repierced if neccessary? Any other advice apart from handcuff her to stop her fiddling! Cheers BB |

[...] My girlfriend tried to replace a piece of jewelry that I'd removed from my earlobe, but the hole had slammed shut like a door. Nothing doing. She tried valiantly to get the sucker back in my ear with no success but also no cross infection either although I suffered the same slight swelling and soreness from the attempt. Googling the subject resulted in the following trivia: "Redness, swelling, inflammation and the exudation of serum (weeping ) all signify that the ear is infected." As well as: "Closed holes are caused by removing the studs too early, or by not continuing to wear earrings after the removal of original studs." The following may also prove of interest: "Aftercare and advice After the ear piercing treatment the client should be given clear instructions on how to care for her ears to prevent secondary infection. The studs must not be removed for six weeks. Invite the client to return to the salon after the six - week period for you to remove the studs. Remind the client always to wash her hands before cleaning the ear area. (If someone else is going to clean the ears, she also must wash her hand with soap and warm water before touching the clients ears.) The ears should be cleaned twice daily, using an eau de cologne or surgical spirit. The lotion may be applied as directed by the manufacturer. If surgical spirit is used, this should be applied to clean cotton wool, and the cotton wool squeezed to allow the surgical spirit to run around the stud, at the front of the ear and then at the back." /copy and paste Not relevant to your situation exactly but the six weeks advice probably would've been a good thing to take note of. Best of luck. Please post a follow-up. -- Curt |

<snipped> DO NOT EVER TAKE HEALING ADVICE FROM CURT! Period. He did not reference his source. Wonder why? Probably from Claire's. But note he does reference the use of "spirits." That's alcohol. Reference LITHA or LIMA. Curt abandons more piercings than he has ever healed. He calls it "the experience." The experience he has is only getting the initial piercing. He has much less experience in healing. He removes the jewelry long before the piercing is healed. Notice he didn't say how HE healed a piercing. Again, wonder why. Kavin |

Knowing alot about piercings, the best thing is to let it close.
Putting it back in while its irritated will cause an infection. Have it repierced in about 2 weeks but she can't be taking out to clean right after it's pierced, you have to give it up to 3-4 weeks to heal first. Thats why she couldn't put the jelwery back in. Good luck |

Sounds like she had it done with a piercing gun? http://www.compunction.org/guns.txt Let it heal for a few weeks, then get it redone by a reputable piercer. > Any other advice apart from handcuff her to stop her fiddling! If the problems she already has from messing with it are not enough to convince her to keep her hands off, she shouldn't have the piercing IMO. Nina -- C'est les microbes qui auront le dernier mot.
