I have been trying to figure out what I want in my first tattoo. I
have decided it is going to be a half sleeve with the shoulder and pec. I have always been fascinated with japanese tattoo art and the culture. I have thought of getting a kabuki mask on my chest, but am having trouble figuring out the meaning behind some of the masks. I have found conflicting meanings behind the symbolism to the shikami mask which is overwhelmingly my favorite. They say it is a demon spirit, but I have found different sites saying that they are protectors and others saying they represent cruelty that exists outside of human emotions. Please someone set me straight with the japanese meaning/symbolism with this mask. I would much rather have a mask that is meant to represent protection rather than fierce aggresion and violence. I dont think my girlfriend would appreciate the translation slip-up. Thank you for any help in advance. Here are a few sites to show you what i am refering to. http://nohmask21.com/eu/shikami.html http://tlc.discovery.com/fansites/mi...allery_11.html Thanks again |

Usually people who have always been fascinated have a much better foundation of knowledge. I would expect you to have quite a few books on the subject. Maybe a few tapes. Some photos. That said, why not try a library? You could call a consulate. You might even talk to someone who IS Japanese. There are bookstores. If all you are using is the Net, you are not trying hard enough.
