Another delurker here. This was one of the first places I looked for
information when I got my first tattoo about 7 years ago. Well, here and BME magazine. I only peek in now and then as evidenced by my posting from Google. I'm probably just a beginner as I only have 2 tattoos and only have plans for 2 more. Both of mine are originals, created just for me. I was lucky to find an artist who is, well, an artist. In fact, for my first I gave him lots of pictures and pointed out what parts of which pictures I liked. When he called in a couple of weeks he'd created exactly what I wanted. My second one is on the side of my neck and though it's only 4 years old I need to get it touched up. The artist told me that they wouldn't guarantee the colors because the neck area where I got it moves a lot and that this can sometimes push out the ink. I've not been as strict as I should have been, too, about using sunblock. I have the basic design for my next one though it will take some "gussying up". I took me a few years to find it. I want something that has a personal meaning to me and that no one else has. I just have to decide where this one will go. mady, heading back to the shadows |

In lieu of pictures, could you at least describe what the tattoos look like or offer details re the subject matter, meaning, etc. > I have the basic design for my next one though it will take some > "gussying up". The first is a bird in flight, sort of in the style of Audobon. The color and shape look like a stylized sparrow, which was the fist screen name I used on AOL a looooooong time ago. I'm also an amature birder. It's located on my left upper breast. The one on my neck is an Irish horse. I saw the design on a pendant in a catalogue and cut it out. It was just a basic outline, rather stylized, and the artist added the colors and details. My next one is going to be a cat. In fact, I found a cat pendant similar to the horse, probably by the same jeweler. As with the horse, I will let the artist flesh out the details. This is one where I am not sure yet where to put it. These three represent my totems, if you will. These are the three animals that I am drawn to. I want the fourth one to look like the imprint of a bare foot in wet sand and I plan to put this one on my butt. This one is for my husband who is dedicated to going barefoot as much as possible. I haven't gotten to the design stage yet so I am not even sure if it can be done. I am a bit behind in getting the tattoos because I came down with Bell's Palsy. It's a virus in the same family as herpes and though not contageious at all it can cause some problems due to skin trauma. I found this out when I got a bad burn some months after the onset of the disease and I broke out around the wound area. So I am just giving it some time. mady |

That sounds humorous, the idea. And I'm sure it can be done. You just have to find the right artist. > I am a bit behind in getting the tattoos because I came down with > Bell's Palsy. It's a virus in the same family as herpes and though A friend of mine had that, iirc. The one side of his face was slack, paralyzed, but thankfully it wasn't permanent. I think he said he suffered a similar event previously. (Googles) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bell's_palsy Yep, that was it. :o( > not contageious at all it can cause some problems due to skin trauma. > I found this out when I got a bad burn some months after the onset of > the disease and I broke out around the wound area. That is what has kept me from getting the next tattoo. While I have found lots of info about the Bell's itself, I have not found anything about getting tattoos after having it and I am not sure I want to be a test case. Remembr, this is the same virus family that causes skin eruptions, such as Chicken Pox and herpes-related cold sores. mady |

My friend had facial paralysis, but I'm not aware that there was any skin eruptions involved. Regardless, you stated clearly, "I am a bit behind in getting the tattoos because I came down with Bell's Palsy. It's a virus in the same family as herpes and though not contageious at all it can cause some problems due to skin trauma. So your fear or expectation is that you might break out in response to the tattooing process much like the burn, I'm assuming. Duh. I didn't catch that at first glance. Reasonable expectation or fear. Skin, our largest organ, is a blessing but it can also be a curse. :o( -- Curt |

Between the fear (mostly due to lack of information) of an outbreak and desire for the tattoo, I'm kind of at a standstill. mady |
