Default Does it HAVE to be a memorial tattoo?

After watching LA Ink for the last couple of weeks, and having watched
Miami Ink, I'm wondering if people can just get a tattoo just to get a
tattoo?

Kat Von D is hot. And I can't tell if I want to smack the crap out of
Pixie or do her in the picture booth.

But Jesus Christ on a Pogo Stick -- I am tired of almost every single
person coming into the shop getting a tattoo to commemorate a death,
or a divorce or just in case my kids die I've always got a tattoo of
them on my arm.

I'd even settle for a penis mushroom tattoo at this point.

I know what you mean, can't people just get something because they
want it? Half the time people need a reason to get something done as
it makes it easier, ye know?

I have four tattoo's and only one of them means something, the rest
are just because i wanted them. Oh an i totally agree, Kat Von D is
most definatly hot =] an i shall also add to the paypal for the penis
mushroom tattoo ;]

Of all the reasons to go to Austin, that's not one.

Thanks anyway.

But you have to understand--the general public frowns on tattoos.

"It's going to be with you for the rest of your life. When you're 60,
you'll regret it. Make it worth it," they say.

Because of this, the producers of these shows have to "justify" tattoos
to the general public. So, if we listen to the shows, this means that
the only reason to ever get a tattoo is to mark something important in
one's life. I don't think this is a bad reason to get a tattoo, but I
definitely DON'T think it's the ONLY reason to get one.

I agree with you completely, but, unfortunately, the rest of the world
doesn't. Oh well.

You're assuming the general public watches the program. Maybe a
curious few, but no, not the general public that frowns on tattoos.
And I don't think the producers are trying to convert people. In
fact, the only reason this show can exist is the opposite of you're
theory -- it's safe.

Do you realize that the admonition against getting a tattoo is because
you should not mark the body as a sign of grief?

The show has to be interesting or else no one will watch. I suspect
they believe the story behind the tattoo has to be interesting or else
the show would be truly boring -- and let's face it, it would be. But
I think someone who is easy on the eyes just getting a tattoo while
just shooting the shit with their tattoo artist would be a nice way to
pass a few minutes.

actually the ONLY REASON the show exists is so the producers, stars, and
distribution systems can make some money. They are not doing so for any
other reason. Not an opinion folks, just another pair of facts. Two of the
three "tattoo" shows were my clients.

"make no cut nor mark upon your body for the dead"
not an exact quote, but don't want to get up and get out a bible. I still
love to get in that discussion with the fanatic fringe, then tell them all
about the kokopelli/cliff dwelling on my calf. Of course that is the one
with Jack's ashes<G>

Did you know I am going to hell, I've been told so by many people.

OH. MY. GAHD! Do you mean tattoo "artists" are just plying their
trade to make money? It's not because it is cool?

You are a mean, evil, old bastard.

And I'll match you with my niece's hand-print with my sister's ashes.

Fyi: Reports of RAB's demise are apparently greatly exaggerated.
