I'm considering getting a tattoo. I've always been interested in
getting one, and at my age (38), I feel like I don't really care what others think, if I want one, I should get it. So, here's what I'm thinking of doing, just looking for some thoughts or suggestions about my approach: I want the tattoo to represent something important in my life. So, I thought of my daughter. I was actually thinking of getting her name in some cool font. * How do I avoid this looking like the name of my biker girlfriend? * How do I avoid this looking like a memorial tattoo? My daughter is 8, and alive and well. * Location: I was thinking lower leg/calf area. What are your thoughts? |

Didn't you just write you don't care what others think? ;) Nina -- C'est les microbes qui auront le dernier mot. Louis Pasteur http://www.chaotropic.net |

Or on your forearm - running from your elbow to your wrist. I worked with a woman who had the names of her three children at the base of her skull with little cherubs for each name. She wore her hair down and no one saw it, but when she tied her hair up then you saw her tattoo. I never thought it was a memorial tattoo and doubt anyone would without the stereotypical cross or rest in peace included. The kid art idea (elsewhere in this thread) would be cool, too. Get that on your back and be sure to have your daughter sign it! Are you built like a refrigerator? ;) -- Curt |

So, I should clarify, I don't care about what people think ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT I SHOULD GET ONE, but I was asking for opinions on the specific questions I asked. |

Because, if the best you can do to show how important your daughter is to you is to have her name done in a "cool" font tattoo, I feel sad for you. And by the way, you're still just justifying getting a tattoo. You're thinking if you get something that "symbolizes" something "important," your tattoo isn't just a tattoo. You've always been interested in getting a tattoo, and this is the best you can do? I could only laugh more if you wanted to know how to do it in kanji. Kavin |

I'm coming off like a lame poser? That I don't truly understand the ethic and art of tattoo? I agree, it's probably a fair criticism. |

Turns out your the resident asshole for this newsgroup (every newsgroup has one or more), loving to bicker over semantics, and picking on newbies. I was just hoping to get some help generating some ideas, from people more experienced in the area. Nina and Curt seemed to understand that. Thanks to anyone who can offer some suggestions. |

<snipped a bunch of sniveling> You still don't get it. And you're not only justifying getting a tattoo, but you're trying to make me the bad guy. That's fine. That's how you live your life. I question why the tattoo has to be "significant." That's it. Your words. And then you had to look for something significant. When you found it, the best thing you could come up with was "a cool font." For 38, you're immature. I never argued semantics. Motivation, maybe. The psychology of your decision, definitely. The fact you can't see I'm pushing you to examine your thought process is understandable. And I'll wager it's typical of you. And if you've REALLY researched, you'll see my advice is sound. Kavin |

sb> I feel like I don't really care what sb> others think, Oh, and I guess that's the reason why you have to get some type of "group" consensus on your decisions? "Where can we stop on a family cross-country drive?" "What watch should I buy?" "Will my wife like diamond studs or drops better?" "Dune?" "Why do some IT people hate Microsoft, and some not really care?" Yeah. Google is fun. By the way, did you ever "grow a pair?" I'd say not. Kavin |
