Hey... got some black work done on my lower back (right over the spine,
about 3 inches in diameter) exactly a week ago. Now, the tattoo is kind of rough and flaking (they said this would happen), but I've developed a red rash that covers my entire lower back. It's annoying to say the least... disturbing too. The tattoo seems to be doing okay and progressing the way the artist said it would, but this rash is there. I was told to (1) keep the bandage on for a few hours, (2) then go home and wash the tattoo with gentle antibacterial soap and lukewarm water, (3) let tattoo air dry, (4) cover with thin layer of A&D ointment for several days until the tattoo began to flake, (5) put unscented lotion on it about 4 times a day until flaking is complete. I have done all this, and I have not exposed the tattoo to sun, gone swimming, or done anything weird except shower as usual. So, WHY is the rash all over my back??? Any ideas??? |

I'm going to guess a massive histamine reaction to the garbage thats in the majority of black ink. -----yttrx -- http://www.yttrx.net |

The Holy Dermatologist fit me in this afternoon and does not know exactly what caused the rash -- however, after having seen quite a few cases of ink allergy in her years of practice, she is quite certain that is NOT the case here, thankfully. Her only thoughts are perhaps an allergy to the antibacterial soap used in the beginning, an allergy to the A&D ointment used in the beginning, or ... that the rash is something totally separate from the tattoo and appeared coincidentally. I have a cream for the rash and instructions to call back if it gets worse or I develop a fever and feel like shit (in which case, that would mean cellulitis due to strep or staph, and would require antibiotic treatment). Good. Glad to read the massive histamine reaction guess was incorrect. People guess wrong sometimes especially when they're not operating with all the facts. ;o) > Her only thoughts are perhaps an allergy to the antibacterial soap > used in the beginning, an allergy to the A&D ointment used in the > beginning, or ... that the rash is something totally separate from > the tattoo and appeared coincidentally. Sounds reasonable. I'm glad you visited the dermatologist. > I have a cream for the rash and instructions to call back if it gets > worse or I develop a fever and feel like shit (in which case, that Get well soon. > would mean cellulitis due to strep or staph, and would require > antibiotic treatment). Yikes! I hope it's none of that. > Bye Please post a follow-up. I'd be interested to know how it all works out. -- Curt http://curtjames.com/ |
