I was always told that tattoos need to heal naturally, so do not need any
kind of antibiotic ointment on them. Something about the ointment can pull the ink out since it's supposed to clean it or whatever. So I do a search: "triple antibiotic ointment" tattoo" and what comes up? Almost every single link says to use antibiotic ointment on a new tattoo. Out of the many, many tattoo websites, I found ONE that did not recommend using the ointment. I gave up after awhile because I had other things to do. There are even several bme pages I found recommending the use of it. I did use A&D(without zinc) if the itching got too bad but not antibiotic anything. Lotion is bad for my skin but A&D doesn't bother it so I've always used it when my hands are dry in the winter. I have never had problems with my tattoos healing. Marie |

I changed my search string to "triple antibiotic ointment and tattoos" which was nearly identical to yours anyway and eventually spotted: "Some people have been known to develop an allergy to Bacitracin, Triple antibiotic and other ointments may contain it. We do not recommend it. Nor do we recommend plain Vaseline. Lotions are safest in warm weather. Keeping it moist will speed the healing process, but your tattoo needs to breathe. Heavy application of petroleum based ointments can suffocate the tattoo and cause a rash." From: http://www.risingdragon.com/FAQ/takecare.html I'd go with the anecdotal yadayada myself and avoid the goop. I do recall, however, using a dot or so of A&D on my Calvin and Hobbes. My leg didn't fall off. ;o) Otoh, A&D's something that risingdragon.com's link recommends. > *snorfle* Now, THERE's a sound effect I never read. (Googles) Oh. Why would you use an antibiotic on something that isn't infected? |

What you really found is that within that subset of tattoo sites containing the string "triple antibiotic ointment", the majority recommend triple antibiotic ointment. Lara |

So you can shut up now, right? You miss Elzi, but you don't listen to her sound advice. You insist on being a turd when it would... behoove (God, I love that word) you to simply shut your own mouth if your goal is to have someone else shut theirs. And, no, this isn't a case of pot, kettle, black, btw, as I don't care if you shut up or not. Also, I can well imagine some people thinking that an antibiotic would be a good preventative measure - not that that's correct, but I wouldn't be surprised that there are people out there. Hey, people do stupid stuff. I mean, look at your earlobe tattoo. You thought that was rather stupid eventually, right? Right. -- Curt http://curtjames.com/ |
