.....about this new hole in my nose.
So I'm going about my thing, doing the daily cleaning*, taking care not to touch or let anything stress it. The healing seems to be coming along beautifully. There was very little irritation after the first three days and almost no pain. Fast forward and it's a week later. Tomorrow I go in for my first control, but before I do I'd like to describe something I noticed today and see what you think. When I went in to be pierced my piercer gave me the choice of a barbell stud or a ring, and I chose the stud. I believe it's a 16 gauge, and the ball tips are tiny. It was a bit snug for the first few days but not tight, and now the swelling is gone down it feels okay. Here's the thing I want to ask of you who are familiar with nostril piercings. In cleaning today I pushed the barbell up a bit and was able to take a closer took at the piercing site for the first time. I noticed where the shaft is sitting at an angle, the hole made by the needle is no longer round but has taken an elliptical shape, just a tiny bit elongated. It's very minuscule and may just be the normal healing process, but I've read the goal is to get the flesh to snug up against the jewelry. It's very early in the game but mine doesn't appear to be doing that. Rather, the straight bar has made itself a little groove and is lying in that groove, and the skin there looks a little spongy and not firm at all. I don't want to freak out like I did before so I went reading to see what I can find out. What I found consistently was: -it's a better idea to go a gauge up when doing this piercing. Check. -the cheesecutter effect doesn't tend to be a big problem with nostril piercings. If so, then great. -the preferred jewelry to do a nostril piercing, even an initial piercing, are larger gauge screws (16g preferred) and rings. Period. What?? A couple articles even went so far as to say barbells are never indicated for this type of piercing. ??? Could it be the barbell is at fault for the oval-shaped hole just beginning to form? The angle of the bar is great on the inside. It isn't a long shaft and it fits almost perfectly, sitting free inside the nostril and not irritating the sides, which are a tad narrow to begin with. But looking at it on the surface for the first time it seems as if the straightness of the shaft is causing the jewelry to lie to one side and deform the shape of the hole. That being the case I'm thinking of asking my piercer tomorrow to change it to a ring - but I've heard if I sleep on my face this could result in stress at the site. Or a banana barbell - hopefully the curve in the shaft will take care of this problem. Or to go ahead and fit me with a screw - but maybe he'll balk because it's a little too soon for that. He's already told me he doesn't like to use screws as initial jewelry and he must have his reasons. Most important, although I'd like to change to a screw or a pin in the future because they're pretty, at this point it isn't about pretty, it's about getting healed correctly. I don't care what the jewelry looks like as long as it contributes to a correctly shaped, well-healed piercing. Opinions? Thanks again in advance. *Pared it down to 2-3 salt-water swabbings per day instead of the recommended 3-5 because I'm getting a bit of peeling on the outside and irritation on the inside, even though the salt to water ratio isn't too high - I measured + tasted it. Tasted it *before* the cleaning, of course. I read somewhere it shouldn't be any saltier than the taste of my tears. |
