Permanent earrings

Hi.
Here is quotation from Wikipedia: "Occasionally, hoop earrings are
permanently installed by the use of solder, though this poses some
risks due to toxicity of metals used in soldering and the risk of
burns from the heat involved. Besides permanent installations, locking
earrings are occasionally worn by people of both genders, due to their
personal symbolism or erotic value."

Can anybody explain this? Any references? Any points where I can read

Okay, still not getting it.

You started with earring. Why did you look for earring? Did you
already know about the soldered rings, or was that something you found
and are now intrigued?

I'm really just needling you into going further. The research you do
for yourself will be more satisfying. Google every variation --
soldered earrings, permanent earrings, slave earrings, then just look
at sites.

Then, and I really mean then, come back and ask if any of us have
them, or know where you can look further.

And please, don't say this is for a college paper.
