Hi Ben, I've x-posted to UPB because I'd be lying if I said I was really up to date and the Midlands never was my area of any knowledge. I do know it's worth travelling to get it done properly. I think you've sussed that already. First I'd try and get some idea of what you want, then do a bit of research for artists that specialise. For example most tattooists will churn out so called "tribal" blackwork - but there are a few who produce outstanding blackwork. I know what I'd do if I had my time over again. Then I'd turn up on spec, see their portfolios, talk with them. If they're obviously busy, ask when to come back and discuss in detail etc. If you can't face turning up on spec, give them a call first, they won't mind. If they're unwilling or prickly - move on. -- Dnc |

I notice that none of the artists at the studio have displayed any "tribal" - doesn't mean they're no good mind. Compared to someone like Curly in Oxford http://www.tattoo.co.uk/gallery.htm who shows mostly blackwork in his portfolio. Likewise Xed le Hed http://www.xedtattoo.com/ has a great reputation for similar. -- dnc |
